What is Ringworm and what are ringworm symptoms?
A common question asked quite often is simply what is ringworm?
And the question itself is definitely worth answering…
In a nutshell, ringworm or ringworms is a fungal infection that affects the surface of the skin. Often, the outcome of ring worms fungal infection is highly visible, red, and slighly raised round spots with a white center. It sometimes looks like and embedded “Cheerio” under the skin. Ringworm can develop in many forms, some of which include the following:
Tinea barbae
Affects bearded area of the face and neck.
Condition causes swelling, itching, and marked crusting.
Beard hair becomes brittle and may break off.
Also known as barber’s itch.
Tinea capitis
Ringworm of the scalp.
Appears as scalp scaling, and is associated with bald spots.
Commonly affects children in late childhood or adolescence.
Often spread in school settings.
Tinea corporis
Ringworm of the body.
Fungus affects the skin of the body and often produces the round spots of classic ringworm.
Spots sometimes have an active outer border as they slowly grow and advance.
Tinea cruris
Ringworm of the groin, or also known as “jock itch”
Tends to have a reddish-brown color and extends from the folds of the groin down onto one or both thighs.
Tinea faciei
Ringworm of the face excluding the beard area.
On the face, ringworm is rarely ring-shaped.
Usually causes red, scaly patches with indistinct edges.
Tinea manus
Ringworm involving the hands… Specifically, the palms and the spaces between the fingers.
This condition typically causes thickening (hyperkeratosis) of these areas, often on only one hand.
Tinea manus is a common companion of tinea pedis (ringworm of the feet).
Also known as tinea manuum.
Tinea pedis
Also known as Athlete’s foot,
Causes scaling and inflammation in the toe webs, especially the one between the 4th and 5th toes.
May also produce a thickening or scaling of the skin on the heels and soles. This is known as “moccasin distribution”.May also cause blisters between the toes or on the sole.
Is an extremely common skin disorder.
Is the most persistent of the fungal (tinea) infections.
Rare before adolescence.
May occur in association with other fungal skin infections such as tinea cruris (jock itch).
Tinea unguium:
Causes the fingernails and, more often, the toenails to yellow and thicken, and crumbe. This condition is called fungal nail infections or onychomycosis.
